Massachusetts Public Library Trustees Handbook

Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners

Commissioners' Message

Dear Trustees,

On behalf of the Board of Library Commissioners, I am pleased to present this Massachusetts Public Library Trustees Handbook to more than 2,500 library trustees throughout our commonwealth.

The role of trustees cannot be underplayed, as they are entrusted with overseeing , maintaining and planning the future for the most democratic of all of our public institutions, the public library. I am convinced by attending literally hundreds of library events, ground breakings, dedications, anniversary and countless other celebratory events, that no other public institution evokes the love, respect and dedication as does the public library. There is no doubt that the public library is essential to a community's educational, economic and social growth.

There are many challenges for today's libraries. Your involvement and leadership as informed trustees are integral to providing the best possible library service, service commensurate with the needs of patrons as we face the information explosion into the 21st century.

I commend the Trustee Handbook Committee for their diligence and expertise which has resulted in a most comprehensive, user-friendly handbook. I encourage all trustees to take time to familiarize themselves with the handbook and to refer to it as needed. The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners will continue to sponsor ongoing workshops in response to the needs of trustees. Also, the Board's Public Library Advisory Unit is available for consultation.

I wish you all great success and deep satisfaction in your noble roles as trustees of our public libraries in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Elia Marnik, Chair (1998-2000)
