Business - Career Services Grants Awarded to 16 Massachusetts Libraries
BOSTON: The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and the State Advisory Council on Libraries is pleased to announce that it has awarded 16 Business - Career Services Mini-Grants totaling $271,864 to 15 public and 1 academic library across the Commonwealth under the Federal Library Services and Technology Act. These grants are in addition to the $1,795.046 in grants that were announced in October. These grants are designed to assist libraries in providing enhanced service to their patrons by being better positioned and able to address the business and career needs of their local communities. The libraries will use their grants to develop collections, conduct training, and implement programming around business and career information.
The Library Services and Technology Act is a Federal program administered in Massachusetts by the Board of Library Commissioners. The Board of Library Commissioners, a nine-member Board is appointed by the Governor and is the agency of state government with the statutory authority and responsibility to organize, develop, coordinate, regulate and improve library services throughout the Commonwealth. LSTA funds are appropriated by Congress and the President in order to stimulate excellence in library service and to promote access to learning and information resources for all individuals. LSTA is administered at the Federal level by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Board of Library Commissioners (mass.gov/mblc) is the agency of state government with the statutory authority and responsibility to organize, develop, coordinate and improve library services throughout the Commonwealth. The Board advises municipalities and library trustees on the operation and maintenance of public libraries, including construction and renovation. It administers state and federal grant programs for libraries and promotes cooperation among all types of libraries through regional library systems and automated resource sharing. It also works to ensure that all residents of the Commonwealth, regardless of their geographic location, social or economic status, age, level of physical or intellectual ability or cultural background, have access to essential new electronic information technologies and significant electronic databases.
